India issued Customs Notification No. 75/2026-Customs (N.T.) to fix and update the tariff values for edible oils, brass scrap, areca nuts, gold, and silver, effective from September 16, 2026.
India’s Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) set new tariff values for imports of palm oil, soybean oil, brass scrap, gold, silver and areca nuts, in force from Sept. 16, 20261.
A tariff value is a fixed price, in US dollars, that Indian customs uses to work out import duty on these goods. It replaces the price on the invoice for the duty sum.
In short, customs in India now uses new dollar prices for edible oils, brass scrap and gold when it calculates duty. The duty on a shipment follows these table prices, not the price the buyer paid.
Who issued Notification No. 75/2026?
The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, part of India’s Ministry of Finance, issued Notification No. 75/2026-Customs (N.T.) in New Delhi on Sept. 15, 20261. It uses powers under sub-section (2) of section 14 of the Customs Act, 19621.
The notification changes an older one, No. 36/2001-Customs (N.T.), dated Aug. 3, 20011. That 2001 notification holds the list of tariff values. The new text replaces all three of its tables1.
The last change before this one was Notification No. 72/2026-Customs (N.T.), dated Aug. 31, 20261. The file number is F. No. 467/01/2026-Cus.V, and Under Secretary Indrajit Panda signed it1.
What are the new values for palm and soybean oil?
The first table sets values in US dollars per metric tonne1. The new values for edible oils are:
- Crude palm oil (1511 10 00): $1,219 per tonne
- RBD palm oil (1511 90 10): $1,231 per tonne
- Other palm oil (1511 90 90): $1,225 per tonne
- Crude palmolein (1511 10 00): $1,239 per tonne
- RBD palmolein (1511 90 20): $1,242 per tonne
- Other palmolein (1511 90 90): $1,241 per tonne
- Crude soybean oil (1507 10 00): $1,268 per tonne
New tariff values for edible oils, US$ per tonne
These figures come from the notification’s first table1. Customs applies the duty rate to these dollar values, not to the price a buyer paid.
How much does brass scrap change?
Brass scrap of all grades, under tariff item 7404 00 22, now has a tariff value of $8,218 per tonne1. It sits in the same table as the edible oils.
Tariff values, August 2025 and September 2026
| Goods, per tonne | From Aug. 15, 2025 | From Sept. 16, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Brass scrap | $5,542 | $8,218 |
| Crude palm oil | $1,030 | $1,219 |
| Crude soybean oil | $1,134 | $1,268 |
For comparison, a year earlier, Notification No. 50/2025-Customs (N.T.) set brass scrap at $5,542 per tonne from Aug. 15, 20252. The same 2025 notification put crude palm oil at $1,030 per tonne and crude soybean oil at $1,134 per tonne2. The new values are well above those levels.
What happens to gold, silver and areca nuts?
The second table covers gold and silver under chapter 71 or 981. Gold imported with the benefit of serial number 194 of Notification No. 45/2025-Customs, dated Oct. 24, 2025, has a value of $1,373 per 10 grams1.
What changed, and what did not
Silver imported with the benefit of serial number 195 of the same 2025 notification stays at $2,028 per kilogram1. The notification marks this figure "no change"1.
The table also has entries for silver, silver coins and medallions with at least 99.9% silver, and for gold bars, gold coins and gold findings1. Gold findings are small jewellery parts such as hooks, clasps and pins1. These two entries do not apply to goods brought in by post, courier or baggage1.
The third table covers areca nuts under code 0802801. Their value stays at $11,574 per metric ton, again marked "no change"1.
How does the tariff value affect a shipment?
The value on the invoice does not set the duty for these goods. Customs multiplies the duty rate by the tariff value in the table. When the table value goes up, the duty paid on each tonne goes up too, even if the buyer’s contract price is lower.
The Board updates these tables often. The August 2025 notification replaced the same three tables2. An October 2019 notification did the same, and at that time it also listed poppy seeds3. Poppy seeds do not appear in the September 2026 tables1.
When do the new tariff values apply?
The notification states that it comes into force on Sept. 16, 20261. Oil, brass scrap and gold shipments cleared from that date carry duty worked out on the new dollar values.
